so it goes

yesterday i mourned the loss of one great writer, and celebrated the arrival of a new one. i haven't been to many book readings, particularly poetry, so i am no expert, but i think it was a huge success. none of the readers broke down in tears and no tomatoes were thrown, and really what more can we ask for? oh yeah great poetry, and we weren't disappointed. as kevin so succinctly put it, it was a proud moment. now let's give those writers one more woo hoo!

want to see more, less manipulated pictures? or better yet buy the book!

the great escape

this is cohen's latest and greatest trick, scaling the walls of casa de cohen. thankfully, until now, we have had the good sense to keep all items that are climbable along the back wall (and yes he did manage to get up there on his own, impressively he got himself down as well...i expected some belly aching, but there was none) thereby foiling his plans. the exception to that would be the round tub that holds his giant sized lego pieces which today he managed to pick up and carry to the front wall, then turn over, and promptly climb upon. i turned to find him leaning over the fence, his torso teetering on the edge, ready to hoist himself over.

steve mcqueen would be proud.

in other news, are you going to marita's book launch tomorrow night? i am quite certain that the five of you who read my blog also read hers, but in case there is someone who doesn't, you should go. it is where the cool people are going to be and you want to be cool, don't you?

lookin' for a place to happen

today was swim day! our trip to prince george and seeing just how much cohen loves the pool renewed my interest in finding a place here in the city for us to go. i found this which it turns out is only one bus ride and a short walk away for us. not only does it have an amazing kids pool, complete with a little river that has a current running through it and an area for little little ones where the water is only about a foot deep, but it is uses an ozone system for filtration which means less chlorine in cohen's eyes.

i was excited to check it out, but thought i should go alone to see how far it was to get to, so one night last week after cohen had gone to bed i made the trek over and had a swim. it wasn't too far, only about twenty minutes on the bus. the pool itself was great, and i knew right away that he would love it, so today we went together. uncle elton and cohen's cousins reidun and kyla also came along. there was a lot of splashing and laughing and then a lot of sleeping. i was able to keep him awake to eat dinner but come 6 he was fast asleep and that is where he has been ever since. i look forward to making it a regular outing for us, so much fun!

now i am off to read the end of my book. it is often sad, but also deeply satisfying to come to the end of a book i enjoy. it will be the perfect end to a perfect day.

well it was worth a shot anyway

this morning sometime around seven i felt a knock on my skull, so i carefully opened my eyes just a crack to see galena sitting right beside my head, paw in mid air coming in for another strike (claws in of course). so i opened my eyes and made the move towards mobility causing her to jump from her perch leaving a perfect view of cohen's crib where he stood, hands firmly attached to railing, staring intensely at me with a grin on his face. they both wanted the same thing, food. so like every morning i needed to make the call, which was of course to do the easiest thing first. as i trudged to the kitchen with the cat in tow cohen started screaming (he is not fond of playing second fiddle). out of necessity i trudged on and filled the dish with kibble then back to the bedroom to retrieve a screaming cohen and then milk. i desperately wanted some juice but there i was sitting on the bed feeding cohen with no chance of some juice, the chance for that had passed me by. this is my life on a bad day. on a day when who i was, neigh who i am, is lost somewhere in the rubble. a day when instead i am defined by who i am to everyone else. it is part of being a mother and a wife i suppose but on a bad day it is tough to carry the weight.

so today wasn't great, but he slept well and he is asleep for the night now at eight minutes to eight. i think i might join him. i finished stanley park and to be honest it wasn't really my cup of tea. i am looking for books to captivate me these days, the kind of books you just can't put down. that wasn't one of them. i think i will make some tea, put on my pajamas and crawl into bed with the memory keeper's daughter now. with a little luck i will wake up on my own in the morning.

i've always been intrigued by the letter "Q".

so i am reading stanley park by timothy taylor and so far i am really enjoying it. i wasn't sure at first, it seemed...well maybe too polished. i am not sure that is the right word but something wasn't right with me and it. over a few dozen pages i became engaged though. i am quite liking getting interested in a book. i haven't tried in awhile, spending most of my reading time attempting to stay up to date with my harpers subscription or reading short stories. i will keep you posted on how it turns out. i suspect that some of my readers have read it, what did you think?

in other review news i have been meaning to mention a movie that we saw a couple of weeks back now. it was this and it was great, despite looking like something that would have serious potential to put you to sleep. we were glued to our seat and couldn't believe just how interesting the whole thing was. maybe that just makes us complete nerds, which would come to no surprise to anyone.

wait, what was the point of this post again? oh yeah that's right, not much. any good movies/books you've seen/read lately that you want to share?
